J. Scott Nystrom M.D. FACP -Dr Nystrom is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and in both subspecialty boards of Oncology and Hematology. His clinical experience has encompassed both academic medical centers and private practice. He has served two decades as Chief of the section of Hematology/Oncology in the Department of Medicine at St.John Hospital [SJHS] and Medical Center [Detroit, MI]. He has served as SJHS past medical staff President and also was the founding President of the St John Medical Physician Hospital Organization [PHO]. He left full time clinical practice in 2000 and joined the faculty at New England Medical Center, Hematology-Oncology division, Boston, MA.
Dr. Nystrom graduated from Marquette School of Medicine and continued his post graduate fellowship training in Oncology and Hematology at the University of Southern California of Medicine. While there he was an Instructor in Medicine and a Principle Investigator with the Western Cancer Study Group. He subsequently transferred to the University of Connecticut Health Center where he co-directed the University's Oncology Division and participated in national trials as Principle Investigator with the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group. He held an appointment as Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Wayne State University School of Medicine until moving to Boston. He and his partners currently participate in the Ann Arbor Community Clinical Oncology Program [CCOP].
Dr. Nystrom has served in multiple capacities at St John Hospital including Hospital Executive Committee, Board of Directors, Chairman of the Search Committee for a new chief Department of Medicine and Chairman of the Steering Committees for the development of the Van Elslander Cancer Center He was a founding member of the Michigan Society of Hematology and Oncology and served as its Founding President.. Dr. Nystrom has been twice named "Best Doctor" in Hematology and Oncology by Detroit Monthly magazine.
Dr. Nystrom's professional memberships have included the American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Society of Hematology, Wayne County Medical Society, Detroit Academy of Medicine, American Medical Association, Michigan State Medical Society, American Board of Internal Medicine, American Society of Internal Medicine,, International Society of Hematology and Oncology, the International Society for the Study of Comparative Oncology, Michigan Society of Hematology and Oncology and the Association of Community Cancer centers.
Dr. Nystrom has published extensively in a variety of professional journals, standard texts and is a respected contributor to literature.
Dr. Nystrom currently is a Senior Consultant on the faculty at the New England Medical Center as Senior Consultant in the Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology and Oncology.
